The Latest USB Specifications
The USB-IF released in 2019 the newest USB4™ Specification, which is now available for download on the USB-IF official website. Here are some highlights of USB4™:
- Two-lane operation using existing USB Type-C® cables and up to 40 Gbps operation over 40 Gbps certified cables.
- Multiple data and display protocols to efficiently share the maximum aggregate bandwidth.
- Backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a specification which aims to power electronic devices through a single USB cable. USB PD also shortens charging time and helps create more device mobility for the user.
- On May 26, 2021, the USB-IF announced the USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.1. This update includes 3 new fixed voltages 28V, 36V, and 48V, which in turn allows power to reach 140W, 180W, and 240W respectively.
More complex than its predecessors, USB Type-C® supports USB 3.1 high-speed transmission and power supply rate of up to 100W, and can be plugged in both positive and negative orientations. Regarding power delivery, USB-C alone can deliver 15W (5V/3A), but with USB PD, it can deliver up to 240W.
- On May 5, 2021, the USB-IF released the USB Type-C® Cable and Connector Specification Revision 2.1. The biggest change from the 2.0 version is the addition of the Extended Power Range (EPR) Cable electrical and identification requirements.

As a long-term USB Authorized Test Lab, Allion not only participated in the creation of the USB4 specification but also developed over 100 high-frequency and automated test fixtures. Allion fixtures increase both test accuracy and test speed, making the validation process quick and easy.
Automated Test Equipment
Specifically for USB 3.2 and USB4 cables and connectors, Allion developed the Allion Cable-Connector Multiport System (ACMS), which can be used with a network analyzer and Get_iPar (Intel) for high frequency automated tests.
