The Latest USB Specifications
The USB-IF released in 2019 the newest USB4™ Specification, which is now available for download on the USB-IF official website. Here are some highlights of USB4™:
- Two-lane operation using existing USB Type-C® cables and up to 40 Gbps operation over 40 Gbps certified cables.
- Multiple data and display protocols to efficiently share the maximum aggregate bandwidth.
- Backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a specification which aims to power electronic devices through a single USB cable. USB PD also shortens charging time and helps create more device mobility for the user.
- On May 26, 2021, the USB-IF announced the USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.1. This update includes 3 new fixed voltages 28V, 36V, and 48V, which in turn allows power to reach 140W, 180W, and 240W respectively.
More complex than its predecessors, USB Type-C® supports USB 3.1 high-speed transmission and power supply rate of up to 100W, and can be plugged in both positive and negative orientations. Regarding power delivery, USB-C alone can deliver 15W (5V/3A), but with USB PD, it can deliver up to 240W.
- On May 5, 2021, the USB-IF released the USB Type-C® Cable and Connector Specification Revision 2.1. The biggest change from the 2.0 version is the addition of the Extended Power Range (EPR) Cable electrical and identification requirements.
